Surfer in Pichilemu, Chile
Brief story: Pichilemu shares two characters with California – mild climate and great surfing. Here I met Pati Caceres, a 9-year-old surfer. She lives by the rhythm of the sea. “The ocean is my friend. She gives me a special present – surfing.” Because her family could not afford classes at the local surfing school, Pati was only able to watch the surfers from the shore. Her dream became reality when the local surfing teacher, Nacho, finally gave in to Pati’s persistence and determination for the chance to surf.

Pati’s impact on Miho
Pati’s love of the ocean and her desire to give something back to the ocean inspired me to write a children’s book about the impact of climate change on the ocean and what kids can do to save the ocean. A little girl, the main character of the book, is modeled after Pati. When Nacho heard this idea, he informed me of the great need for affordable children’s books and of his personal desire to increase the literacy rates of Chilean youth. Nacho, also an amazing artist, will be doing the illustrations for the book. This is an ongoing project on which we are collaborating.
